COURSE SUMMARY
The increasing demand for high speed broadband connectivity is placing critical demands on existing telecom network architectures. The new generation of intelligent wide area data systems requires these networks to integrate seamlessly across a plethora of satellite-borne and earth-based technologies. To meet this challenge, a basic working knowledge of the terrestrial telecommunications network is a required skill for todays space professional. This course focuses on network architecture as the central nervous system for advanced connectivity. Attendees are introduced to the terrestrial network in its evolution from singular monopoly to the multiple services now available. Telecom architecture is thoroughly analyzed by using real network examples and examining their relevant characteristics. System performance versus cost principles are investigated along with interface requirements to satellite technology. Special attention is given to describing broadband backbones, the expansion of internet/intranet-driven services, the fundamental differences between switched and routed architecture, and the critical importance of the last mile connectivity in delivering services to end users.
